What is it Like to Attend University of Minnesota
What is it Like to Attend University of Minnesota The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. David is currently a junior at the University of Minnesota studying Biochemistry and Finance. He is a Minneapolis tutor specializing in Chemistry tutoring, Biology tutoring, ACT prep tutoring, and several other subjects. See what he had to say about his school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? David: The University of Minnesota campus is divided into three parts: the East Bank and West Bank in Minneapolis, and the St. Paul campus, a few miles east. All three sections are relatively urban in nature. Campus is relatively safe, but spread out. Walking, busing, or biking between classes is common; driving a car is possible, but finding cheap or free parking can be frustrating. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? David: It really depends on the class. I have had lectures with 20 students, where every student has face time with the professor, and I have had lecture halls of 500, where no one knows the professor very well. Teaching assistants and academic advisers are usually available for larger classroom settings. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? David: We have lots of dorms on campusBailey Hall in St. Paul, Middlebrook Hall on the West Bank, and several more on the East Bank. Most residence halls have integrated dining centers; the ones that do not are near those that do. Most dorms are very social, with lounge-like areas for socializing and periodic group activities. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? David: The University of Minnesota has a broad range of well-represented majors and programs. Chemistry, business, law, and mathematics are especially strong. I am a biochemistry/finance double major, and though my position is unique, I am well supported by my academic advisers/counselors. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? David: I found meeting people at Middlebrook Hall on West Bank to be very easy. I ended up living with friends I made after I moved out, and the atmosphere is friendly and light. Greek life is its own little subculture; those who participate usually stick within Greek circles, and I have never been involved in it. Fraternities and sororities occasionally hold campus events, but for the most part, they stick to themselves. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? David: The career center and job fairs make finding potential employers a breeze. Lots of reputable companies hire students directly after graduation, and there are additional job offers and internship opportunities available on the University of Minnesotas website. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? David: It really depends on the time you go. There are three main libraries: Wilson Library on West Bank, and Walter Library and the biomedical libraries on East Bank. During finals week, good luck finding an open table to study at. But most of the time, there is plenty of room to use. Wilson Library is probably the biggest and least crowded of the three. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? David: The downtown and uptown neighborhoods near campus make adventures to local restaurants and other establishments common. Many students spend time in Dinkytown, where there is food and entertainment in abundance. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? David: The student body is massive, all in all near 50,000. Class sizes really depend on the field of study and division of class. For example, an introductory calculus class may be a massive lecture, whereas a philosophy course I took last year had about 20 students. Generally, my class sizes average under 100which keeps me engaged enough to do well. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. David: I enjoyed Organic Chemistry laboratoryit was hands-on, very challenging, and I had an excellent teaching assistant named David. In the beginning, the experiments were very simple, but as the semester continued on, the complexity increased. By the end, we were performing highly specialized copolymer synthesis reactions, and the sense of achievement was great. Check out Davids tutoring profile. How To Improve Your GRE Score
How To Improve Your GRE Score Update: Some of this article's advice is now outdated due to changes in the GRE. A more recent article on the exam can be found here.First things first: the GRE is for graduate schools, but not for MBA programs (that requires the GMAT); however, some business schools may accept it. Background: The GRE is a computer-based test that generates questions based on your previous answers. If you continue to correctly answer questions, they will get harder. The test has three sections: quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning and analytical writing. The test was updated in August 2011 to more accurately reflect the current thinking skills needed in graduate schools. The quantitative reasoning/verbal reasoning sections are now scored on a 130-170 range with one point increments. The writing section is still scored 0-6 with half point increments. The test has six sections, the last being a research section, and the duration of the test is approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes. There is no new data on what test scores students will need to be accepted into certain schools because the scoring has changed so recently. Now, a scaled score of 150 (on each section) is considered to be an average score. See more score averages from the Educational Testing Services (the creator and administrator of the GRE) here. Understand test directions: On the GRE, time is precious, and you can save loads of it by learning the section directions before the test. Take practice tests: This is everyones first tip to performing better on any standardized test, mainly because it works. Taking practice tests can help your brain mold its thinking around the structure of the GRE and improve your speed. But, be careful about the test prep materials you use because most are outdated. See question types and further materials from the ERT here. Try to make your practice tests as similar to the real GRE as possible. Instead of practicing 30-minute sections at a time, try to practice the entire test in one sitting. Take your tests every Saturday morning around the same time you will take the GRE. Spreading out your studying can help your brain retain the information you learned while practicing, instead of just memorizing it. Its the same idea as studying in smaller increments for a test as opposed to pulling an all-nighter and cramming the day beforeand we all know which one is more beneficial. Try doing this for at least 12 weeks, and you will begin to see significant improvements. Use a GRE study book: They are very easy to find, although most can be expensive. The books will help you recognize patterns and common traps on the GRE. Find the most recent edition of the book to reflect the August 2011 changes. Work with a one-on-one GRE Tutor: Finding out where you struggle is the first (and easiest) step to improving your GRE score. Anyone can do that by taking a practice test. But, to significantly improve your score, you will need to improve in these areas. Thats the real challenge to raising your GRE score. A one-on-one tutor can give you the in-depth training and explanation you may need to improve in your problematic areas. Then, you can work to fine tune your skills in other sections. Taking a GRE prep class can help, but only a tutor can tailor each session to your specific needs. In New York City, GRE tutorsare our most requested tutors. First test in each section: Previously, the first 10 questions in every section were the most important because those would determine your scoring bracket. If you answered all 10 correctly, you would enter the highest possible scoring bracket, and from there, your score could only drop marginally. However, the new GRE is slightly different, although it still offers a tiered scoring system. There are multiple tests in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections. The first test determines your scoring bracket, and the difficulty of the questions in the following tests are determined by your performance on the first test. The scoring brackets are not as significant as they previously were. But, entering a higher scoring bracket early can ultimately improve your score. Answer every question: There is no penalty for an incorrect answer on the new GRE. Review high school math: By the time youre 22, you may want to forget just about everything you did, wore and listened to in high school. But, for the GRE you at least need to remember your algebra and geometry. Taking practice tests/questions or reviewing basic algebra/geometry books could help you. See math an updated math review from the ETS here. Make dictionary.com your homepage: Because you are going to need to know the weirdest, strangest, most-obscure, never-will-be-used-in-context vocab words out there for the GRE verbal section. Read as much high-brow literature as possible, and constantly check dictionary.com for definitions of words youre unfamiliar with. Subscribe for dictionary.coms word of the day. And start doing this early because you cannot grow your vocabulary overnight. Know writing topics: The writing section measures your ability to form an argument for or against a topic. You will be scored on your use of examples, development and support, organization, language fluency and word choice. See possible topics from the ETS here. Also, you can write a practice essay and submit it for scoring here.
Making Your Quiet Voice Heard at Work - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Making Your Quiet Voice Heard at Work - Introvert Whisperer Making Your Quiet Voice Heard at Work Photo by rawpixel / Unsplash Being an introvert in an extrovert-dominated workplace can be difficult. You might feel pressure to live up to everyone elseâs level of social interaction. Perhaps the open floor plan in your office makes it difficult for you to be productive. Maybe working with your extroverted boss sometimes feels tedious and exhausting. There are many difficulties introverts potentially face at work. Luckily, there are a few tips and strategies you can employ to make sure that your managers and co-workers recognize the strengths of introverts rather than pushing for everyone to be extroverted. Letâs take a look at some advice for introverts in the workplace: Use Body Language Using your body language to convey confidence is a great way to make a presence for yourself in the office. Do you ever find yourself at your desk with your shoulders hunched over and head down, purposely avoiding people as they walk by? Good posture and eye contact can go a long way in letting others know that you are friendly, collaborative, and have valuable ideas and insight, even though your voice likely isnât the loudest in the room. When youâre in meetings, show that youâre an active and engaged listener by sitting up straight in your chair and looking at the person whoâs talking. Donât look down at your lap the whole time or sit by yourself off in a corner. These things may seem small, but they can make a big difference in how youâre perceived in the office. Practice Makes Perfect Speaking up in group situations is often a cause of anxiety for many introverts in the workplace. Generally, one of two things happen when an introvert speaks up. In some situations, you speak so infrequently that when you do speak, people listen. But thatâs not always the case. Sometimes, quietness is seen as weakness, and you get interrupted or ignored. If you need to conquer your public-speaking nerves, try practicing what you want to say ahead of time so when the time comes, you can deliver your words with authority and confidence. Itâs harder to interrupt or ignore someone who speaks with authority and without stammering or stumbling over their words. Since many introverts know itâs easy to do those things when youâre nervous, practicing ahead of time can be a lifesaver (or job saver) when it comes to public speaking. Utilize Screens If you, like many introverts, tend to be reserved in person, it might feel more comfortable to participate more fully in online spaces like office chats or email threads than big group meetings or casual office chat in the break rooms. Sometimes, the latter can contribute to workplace anxiety for more introverted employees, leading them to feel unnecessary amounts of stress. If your office doesnât yet have any online communication platforms other than email, consider asking your boss or manager to implement one and tell them why it would benefit you and others who share a similar working style. Be Social

Importance of Emotional Intelligence
Importance of Emotional Intelligence You may have heard how important emotional intelligence is for students as they navigate school, but what is emotional intelligence? Simply put, it involves the ability to understand ones own feelings as well as the emotions of others. Children and teens with high emotional intelligence tend to be more mature and responsible. Here are some of the other reasons children need emotional intelligence: To be able to relate to their peers better. The ability to understand, communicate and work with others effectively will benefit children tremendously. To learn to read social situations. Knowing how to read social cues and body language is a life skill many of us take for granted. Children who are more emotionally intelligent are adept at reacting and responding to others in different scenarios. To foster responsible decision-making. With emotional intelligence comes the ability to make decisions thoughtfully and learn from those decisions by weighing consequences and how different actions can impact different people. To become more skilled at tackling problems. When people are emotionally intelligent, they have greater empathy for others perspectives and can more easily resolve conflicts. Theyre also able to solve problems methodically and thoroughly. To build leadership competencies. The world needs great leaders and emotional intelligence is an essential trait of a great leader. These individuals are good at building relationships based on trust and mutual respect. They listen well and know how to make others comfortable enough to share their ideas and input. Because they are skilled at relating to people, they are also good at building teams and motivating others. So, how can you work on raising an emotionally intelligent child? Here are several tips: Help your child develop his self-awareness. Encourage your child to be more mindful and more willing to take note of his emotions, good or bad, and talk and think through those feelings. Invite conversation. Encourage self-reflection. Nurture the development of good friendships. Children should recognize the difference between healthy and unhealthy friendships. Teach your child what to expect of all friendships and how to be a respectful, encouraging friend to others. Build your childs confidence. To cultivate emotional intelligence, help your child become comfortable with who he is and the decisions he makes in life. Help your child think critically. Because emotional intelligence is all about recognizing ones emotions and reactions and those of others, it also requires trusting ones feelings and conclusions about different people and situations. Make sure your child feels empowered to use his perspectives to make decisions. Teach self-regard for strengths and weaknesses. Theres great value in acceptance. Teach your child to be realistic about who he is and confident enough to believe he can improve on those weaker areas. Its a fact: students who possess emotional intelligence often outperform their peers. Teach your child to develop his and you will set him up for success in all aspects of life. Leading on Opportunity The Opportunity Task Forces call to action - Heart Math Tutoring
Leading on Opportunity â" The Opportunity Task Forceâs call to action - Heart Math Tutoring Leading on Opportunity â" The Opportunity Task Forceâs call to action Leading on Opportunity â" The Opportunity Task Forceâs call to action March 31, 2017 By Emily Elliott Alarmingly, Charlotte and Atlanta ranked 50th out of 50 in economic mobility among the largest U.S. cities in a 2013 Harvard / UC Berkley study. A $400,000 report summarizing 18 months of research by Charlotteâs Opportunity Task Force was released last Monday 3/27/17. This 97-page document outlines 21 strategies and over 80 recommendations for our community. Here are a few points: The report mentions the value of students having âLife Navigatorsâ as early as 7th grade and career awareness as early as 3rd grade. Speakers at Mondayspresentation referenced âan army of volunteersâ and emphasized what a positive force social capital is on our community when we proactively build it. Public education reform was largely excluded, for purposes stated in the report, aside from encouraging CMS to be bold in its school assignment goals and to ensure the quality of a high-school diploma. According the report, 70% of CMS graduates entering CPCC require remediation in math and/or reading before they can take college-level classes. We should be proud of our communityâs efforts to double the literacy rate to 80% by 2025 through Read Charlotte, hailed in the report for its systems-level approach and impact. Though little attention in the report was given to math skills, I am confident that the community will also leverage research indicating that early math skills are strong predictors of future success across subjects. (Duncan, Magnuson, Pagani, Romano, Babchishin, with various studies from 2007 â" 2010) The sections on Segregation and Social Capitalbookend the report. Heart tutors work in high-poverty concentration schools and see the impacts of these factors weekly. Read the report and its recommendations here. While the report makes it clear Charlotte has a long way to go, I hope as Heart volunteers, supporters, and partners, youknow that you are making a tangible, immediate impact on students. Thank you for your work with Heart! ### Heart Math Tutoring is a math intervention program supporting 750 weekly volunteer tutors across 12 CMS high-poverty elementary schools. Students build foundational math skills and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success. âHeart volunteers provide invaluable encouragement and positive influence, delivering a message to our students from the broader community: âWe care about you. Your education is important to us.ââ Regina J. Boyd, Former Principal at Winterfield Elementary (2014)
AMERICAN WOMAN A Plea to Female Voters
AMERICAN WOMAN A Plea to Female Voters Bust of Susan B. Anthony, one of Americas greatest feministsPhoto by Flickr user cliff1066⢠While I know for a fact who I am voting for, and while I am passionate about my political party, I am not here to convince you to side with me. You are a woman with the right to vote (assuming you are of age, of course), and that right is something that did not come easily. Susan B. Anthony, one of Americaâs most influential and passionate women, once said, âWomen, we might as well be dogs baying the moon as petitioners without the right to vote!â Others have fought long and hard for us to have a say in how our country is run, so why neglect that right? A republican woman is equal to a democrat woman is equal to a republican or democrat man. Each vote holds the same weight, and I cannot stress that enough to you ladies. So as November 6th draws closer and closer, get excited. Being active and involved citizens is what will make this nation what it should be. Nothing is more dangerous to our success than apathy, so here I stress one more time to my American women: your voices matter. Let them be heard. I hope to see you all with âI votedâ stickers come Election Day. For more information on being an active woman voter, I suggest looking into your local chapter of the League of Women Voters.
